Welcome to The Real
Transhumanism is many different things in one. The main idea however is the production of sophisticated technologies to enhance the human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities. (It gets pretty lit down here so have fun).
Transhumanism is the whole picture to a bunch of puzzle pieces. It has a multitude of things that apply under it and bring it together as a whole. One of many of those things was disembodiment, the idea that the human brain can survive without it's body. We'll dive deeper into this later on. Another thing is the study of AI's and the idea of creating a Utopia for humans so engrossed in the future and its possibilities. These are two main aspects are very useful to learn about while studying under the idea of transhumanism.

Disembodiment
Here's a quick video on an idea behind disembodiment.
This video dives into the argument against disembodiment. How we shouldn't waste our bodies. How instead putting our bodies in a machine, make ourselves the machine. |
The idea of disembodiment, mainly, is that that a person can be disembodied and still contain full consciousness. A prime example of disembodiment is in the movies Robocop and Avatar. Robocop: This movie is about cop Alex Murphy, who was in a severe accident where he was only able to salvage a hand, head, brain, and vital organs that help his brain survive (i.e. heart and lungs). A scientist working for a large scale corporation that makes robotic police officers offers to give Alex Murphy an artificial body in return for him working for their company. The offer was take up, and Alex managed to survive, even in that black suit of armor, he had complete consciousness. However, Alex was not offered the choice to keep his emotions, for the sake of work purposes. This was the downside of being able to survive without his body, he had to sacrifice being able to love his wife and child. In the end, though, Alex was granted complete access to his emotions for the sake of his family. Avatar: This movie is about how most of society lives in space and people work on a humanely unsuitable planet known as Pandora. The protagonist, Jake Sully, is an inexperienced researcher of the native people of avatar. His mission is to "become" one of them and learn their ways in hopes to get the corporation he works for desires. To do so, Jake must enter the body of a scientifically grown copy of the native people's body. Keep in mind, Jake is paralyzed from the waist down. However, as the "avatar", he has complete motor function. Towards the end, Jake decided he wanted to fuse his body into the avatar to gain function of his legs again. This supports the argument that people can survive without your body, as long as you have a spirit and consciousness. These movies are prime examples of the discussion about how the brain can survive without the body. It's the body that cant survive without it's brain. The brain has all your emotions and thoughts and everything else, not a foot or an arm. |
AI's and Utopias
The idea that AI's can be apart of our lives is a huge step, and a huge dream for some people. Transhumanists believe that if AI's were apart of our lives, we could build gods essentially. These gods could accomplish any need we would want. Thus leading to the idea of a utopia. If we have robots that can do anything, or we find a way for us to be able to anything ad everything, society can be unstoppable. They're be no limitations. Transhumanists want human capacities to be intellectually, physically, and psychological to be enhanced based on their creations. AI's are a key to this. AI's are programmed with tons of information, they're practically unstoppable psychically. What else do they need to make sure their goals as transhumaists are accomplished.
This is another part of the whole transhumanist idea. Artificial intelligence is a main focus behind it. This is a documentary discussing these key points: transhumanism, artificial super-intelligence, and mind-machine mergers.
